How do I get my husband to surprise me?

Its going to be our 1 yr anniversary soon. I dropped out from work to finish college. I always surprise my husband on every possible occassion- the first time we met, his b'day, christmas...anything...!! but he, he never does that! Its like I gotta beg him for gifts or for anything I want. Like for our 1st wedding anniversary (which is coming up soon) I asked him if he would buy me something...n he goes like you have everything you need...what else do you want? I mean...just get me a bouquet or sth....just get me a cake...instead of me having to bake a cake at home on our anniversary...I don't want that to happen. I mean why doesn't he know what I like and what I don't like? He tells me to stop having an interest in "physical or material" things...how do I get him to change his mentality?
